Staff and Pitch Names
Staff
The staff is a graph that musical pitches are placed upon. It has five lines and four spaces. A pitch can be placed on a line or in a space.
Pitch Names
*There are seven repeating pitch names:
A B C D E F G
*Students, you will learn these pitches as you go through the program.
Treble/G Clef
The treble clef sign is placed on the staff to show the position of the pitch names. It also has a second name of G clef, which shows us where to find the pitch G. The pitch G is placed on the second line of the staff - where the treble clef sign scrolls around the G.
Let's Begin!
Click on the right or left side of the flashcards to practice note name recognition. Spend just a few minutes a day to memorize their name and positions.
You can also use the printable G A B flashcards below to help memorize pitches.
To print: click on the expand icon in top right corner of document to see printable page when using a computer, otherwise double click the document on a phone or tablet. Cut on the solid lines, then fold each to make a flashcard.
*Helpful tips:
The staff is labeled in alphabetic order from bottom to top. Every line and space receives a letter name.
Recognize that the G pitch name is found where the treble clef sign circles the second line on the staff
The staff lines are numbered from bottom to top. 1 is the bottom and 5 is the top.
The are many ways to memorize the note names: 1) F A C E (simply the word "face") for the spaces and "Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet" for the lines. You can also say the alphabetic order from A to G forwards and backwards.
The letters are repeated once you get to G. Example: A B C D E F G A B C D E F G
